Located in Khiva, Uzbekistan, this fortified city represents a significant example of urban planning and architecture from the Islamic world. The site encompasses the inner walled city, which preserves substantial portions of its defensive walls, gates, and a dense urban fabric of residential and religious structures. Itchan Kala demonstrates the characteristic layout of a traditional Central Asian city, with narrow streets, courtyards, and buildings constructed primarily in fired brick and decorated ceramic tiles. The ensemble includes numerous madrasahs, mosques, and minarets that reflect the cultural and religious importance of the settlement throughout its history. The preservation of both the fortification system and the interior architectural heritage provides valuable evidence of medieval Islamic city development and construction techniques in Central Asia.
