Located in northern Tunisia, this national park encompasses a shallow brackish lake surrounded by mountains and wetlands. The site was inscribed as a natural World Heritage property due to its ecological significance as a critical habitat for migratory birds, particularly waterfowl species that traverse Africa and Europe. The park's wetland ecosystem supports diverse fauna and flora adapted to its saline and freshwater conditions, making it an important staging ground during migration periods. The landscape is characterized by Lake Ichkeul itself, bordered by reed beds and salt marshes, with the Jebel Ichkeul mountain range forming a dramatic backdrop. The site represents a transitional zone between Mediterranean and Saharan environments, creating a unique biological environment. The wetland's role in maintaining regional biodiversity and providing essential resting and feeding grounds for numerous bird species constitutes the primary basis for its international conservation status.
