This archaeological site comprises numerous megalithic stone circles distributed across the Senegambian region straddling Senegal and the Gambia. The monuments consist of standing stones arranged in circular patterns, representing one of the world's largest concentrations of megalithic structures. Dating to a period spanning several centuries in the pre-colonial era, these circles served ritual, ceremonial, and possibly funerary functions for the region's ancient populations. The site's significance lies in its testimony to sophisticated social organization and shared cultural practices among West African societies. Scattered across the savanna landscape, the stone circles vary in size and composition, providing valuable archaeological evidence of early settlement patterns and belief systems in the Senegambian region.
