Located in The Gambia along the Gambia River, this heritage site comprises Kunta Kinteh Island and associated archaeological locations that document the history of the Atlantic slave trade. The island served as a trading post and fortification from the 17th century onwards, with European merchants and colonial powers establishing commercial operations in the region. The site contains the remains of fortified structures, buildings, and artifacts that provide material evidence of trans-Atlantic commerce and the forced migration of enslaved people. The archaeological deposits preserve layers of occupation spanning several centuries, offering insights into the daily life, trade networks, and human experiences connected to this period of history. The associated sites on the mainland extend the historical landscape to include related settlements and trading stations. This location represents an important testimony to a significant chapter of human history and the experiences of African peoples during the era of European colonial expansion.
