Slovénie

This archaeological site comprises a series of prehistoric pile dwelling (or stilt house) settlements located in the Alpine region, with remains distributed across Slovenia and neighbouring countries. The sites represent exceptional testimony to early agrarian societies in Europe, dating to the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods, and provide rare insights into the living conditions, technologies, and daily life of prehistoric communities. The waterlogged conditions at these locations have resulted in exceptional preservation of organic materials, including wood, textiles, and food remains, which are ordinarily subject to decay. Situated in the foothills and valleys of the Alps, these settlements were strategically positioned near lakes, rivers, and wetland areas that provided essential resources. The archaeological evidence from these sites has fundamentally contributed to understanding prehistoric European settlement patterns, agricultural practices, and cultural development during the transition from hunter-gatherer to sedentary communities. The collective significance of these pile dwelling remains across the Alpine region justifies their recognition as sites of outstanding universal value.
