This cultural heritage site comprises prehistoric pile dwelling (palafitte) settlements located around the Alpine region, primarily in Switzerland. These archaeological remains represent the most significant and best-preserved evidence of early agrarian societies in Europe, dating to the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods. The sites are characterized by waterlogged conditions in lakes, wetlands, and river valleys that have enabled exceptional preservation of organic materials, including wood, textiles, and food remains that typically decompose in other environments. Their exceptional archaeological value lies in providing detailed insights into the daily life, settlement patterns, agricultural practices, and technological development of prehistoric Alpine communities. The geographic setting in the Alpine zone, combined with the unique preservation conditions of the wetland landscape, makes these sites of outstanding importance for understanding the transition from hunter-gatherer to settled farming societies in prehistoric Europe.
