Located in the Dogon region of Mali, this site encompasses a dramatic escarpment that rises abruptly from the Sahel plateau, creating a distinctive geographical feature in West Africa. The cliffs have served as the homeland of the Dogon people for centuries, who established settlements in the rocky terrain and developed a unique material culture adapted to the landscape. The site represents an outstanding example of the interaction between a cultural community and its environment, with settlements built into and around the cliff formations demonstrating architectural responses to the challenging topography. The Dogon people have maintained their traditional way of life, social structures, and artistic practices within this distinctive setting, including their renowned woodcarving traditions and architectural styles. The escarpment landscape, with its vertical rock formations and dispersed villages, creates a visually striking environment that reflects both natural geological processes and human cultural adaptation. The site's inscription recognizes the cultural significance of the Dogon presence and the integration of their heritage with the distinctive physical characteristics of the Bandiagara Cliffs.
