Located in South Korea, this cultural site encompasses two exceptionally well-preserved traditional villages that exemplify Korean settlement patterns and architectural practices from the Joseon period. Hahoe and Yangdong represent outstanding examples of the hierarchical spatial organization characteristic of aristocratic communities, with their layouts reflecting Confucian principles and social structures of historical Korea. Both villages retain their original street patterns, traditional wooden houses, and ancestral shrines arranged according to historical principles, providing valuable insights into Korean domestic and social life. The sites are distinguished by their harmonious integration with the surrounding landscape and the continued habitation of these villages by descendants of the founding families, maintaining living cultural traditions. These villages constitute rare testimonies to traditional Korean settlement organization and vernacular architecture, preserving physical and social continuities across several centuries.
