Located in northern Honshu, this mountainous region straddles the prefectures of Aomori and Akita in Japan. The site is characterized by extensive beech forests that represent one of the last remaining primary temperate forests in East Asia, displaying the natural ecosystem dynamics of this climate zone. The steep terrain and relative isolation have allowed these forests to develop with minimal human intervention, preserving their ecological integrity and biodiversity. The landscape features deep valleys, clear streams, and diverse flora and fauna adapted to the cool, moist mountain environment. The site's inscription recognizes its outstanding universal value as an outstanding example of a temperate primary forest and its importance for scientific understanding of natural forest processes and ecosystem conservation.
