Located in Piazza Armerina in southeastern Sicily, this Roman villa dates from the 4th century CE and represents one of the most significant examples of late imperial residential architecture in the Mediterranean. The site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997 for its exceptional archaeological value and outstanding preservation of decorative elements. The villa is distinguished by its elaborate floor mosaics, which cover extensive areas and depict scenes from daily life, mythology, and hunting expeditions with remarkable detail and artistry. The complex comprises multiple rooms and courtyards organized around a central peristyle, demonstrating the sophisticated spatial planning characteristic of elite Roman dwellings. The mosaics, executed in various styles and techniques, provide invaluable testimony to Roman artistic practices, trade networks, and cultural values during the late imperial period. The site's isolation in the Sicilian countryside has contributed to its preservation and makes it an important archaeological resource for understanding Roman provincial life.
