Located in southeastern Sicily near Syracuse, this site encompasses the ancient city of Syracuse and the distinctive rocky necropolis of Pantalica, together representing significant evidence of human settlement spanning from the Bronze Age through the medieval period. The necropolis consists of thousands of chamber tombs carved into limestone cliffs, reflecting burial practices and settlement patterns of ancient Sicilian populations. Syracuse itself served as an important Greek colony and later Roman settlement, with remains including temples, theaters, and fortifications that document the region's classical heritage. The site's visual character is defined by the dramatic natural landscape of the Anapo River valley, where the carved rock tombs create distinctive architectural features within the surrounding geology. The property was inscribed in 2005 as testimony to the long and complex cultural history of Sicily, illustrating the succession of Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Arab, and Norman influences. Together, the archaeological remains of both Syracuse and Pantalica provide substantial evidence of continuous habitation and cultural development in the Mediterranean region over more than three millennia.
