Located in the city of Ravenna in northeastern Italy, this site comprises a series of early Christian monuments dating from the 5th and 6th centuries. The inscribed buildings include the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, the Basilica of San Vitale, the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe, and the Baptistry of Neon, along with the Archbishop's Chapel. These structures represent exceptional examples of early Byzantine architecture and decorative arts, distinguished by their extensive use of Byzantine mosaics and marble work. The monuments showcase the transition between late antique Roman and Byzantine cultural influences during a period when Ravenna served as an important political center. The site was inscribed in 1996 in recognition of the outstanding artistic and architectural significance of these buildings and their contribution to the development of Christian religious art in the early medieval period.
