This cultural property comprises the medieval and Renaissance city of Ferrara and the Po River Delta in northeastern Italy. Ferrara represents an exceptional example of Renaissance urban planning and architecture, developed under the rule of the Este family from the 13th to 16th centuries. The city's distinctive layout, designed by architect Biagio Rossetti, introduced innovative town planning principles that influenced European urban development. Its characteristic features include the imposing Este Castle, elegant palaces, and a network of streets organized according to Renaissance ideals of rationality and proportion. The Po Delta, extending eastward toward the Adriatic Sea, is an extensive wetland ecosystem formed by river sedimentation and encompasses lagoons, marshes, and agricultural lands. The site's inscription recognizes both the outstanding urban and architectural achievements of the Renaissance city and the natural and cultural significance of the river delta landscape.
