This cultural site encompasses two cities in the Lombardy region of northern Italy that represent distinct periods of Renaissance urban planning and development. Mantua, situated on the Mincio River, served as the seat of the Gonzaga dynasty and evolved into a major Renaissance center, featuring notable architectural works such as the Ducal Palace and the Basilica of Sant'Andrea. Sabbioneta, located approximately 40 kilometers away, was founded in the 16th century by Vespasiano Gonzaga as an ideal city embodying Renaissance principles of rational urban design and fortification. Both cities are characterized by their well-preserved urban layouts, Renaissance palaces, churches, and civic buildings that reflect the artistic and architectural ambitions of their respective periods. The inscription recognizes these two sites as outstanding examples of Renaissance urban planning and architecture, demonstrating the cultural and political significance of the Gonzaga family's patronage in shaping these communities.
