Located in the Indian state of Uttarakhand in the western Himalayas, this natural site encompasses two distinct national parks that protect some of the region's most significant alpine ecosystems. The Nanda Devi National Park centers on the Nanda Devi massif, a dramatic peak surrounded by pristine wilderness, while the Valley of Flowers National Park preserves an extensive alpine meadow known for its exceptional botanical diversity and seasonal wildflower displays. The parks are situated at high altitude in a mountainous terrain characterized by steep valleys, glaciers, and diverse habitats ranging from subtropical forests to alpine tundra. These protected areas support a rich variety of flora and fauna, including several endemic and endangered species adapted to the Himalayan environment. The inscription recognizes the ecological significance of these landscapes and their role in maintaining the integrity of one of the world's major mountain systems. Together, the parks represent an important example of natural heritage preservation in a region of considerable biological and geological importance.
