Located on Mount Carmel in Israel, this archaeological complex comprises a series of caves known locally as Nahal Me'arot or Wadi el-Mughara. The site contains substantial evidence of human habitation and evolution spanning hundreds of thousands of years, with stratigraphic layers documenting the presence of both Neanderthal and early modern human populations. The caves preserve important paleontological and archaeological remains, including stone tools, faunal remains, and human skeletal material that contribute significantly to understanding human development during the Pleistocene epoch. The site's geological setting within the Mount Carmel massif, combined with its well-preserved deposits, has made it a crucial reference point for studying Middle and Late Paleolithic human cultures in the Levantine region. The succession of occupation layers and the quality of preservation at these caves provide essential information about the transition between different human species and cultural periods in prehistoric times.
