Located on the Greek island of Patmos in the Aegean Sea, this site encompasses the historic town of Chorá and two major religious monuments of significant Christian importance. The Monastery of Saint John the Theologian dominates the settlement, representing a major example of Byzantine architecture and serving as a centre of Orthodox Christianity since its foundation in the 11th century. Adjacent to the monastery lies the Cave of the Apocalypse, traditionally believed to be the location where Saint John received the visions recorded in the Book of Revelation. The fortified medieval town that developed around these sacred sites preserves the architectural character of its Byzantine and post-Byzantine periods, with narrow streets and whitewashed buildings typical of the Aegean region. The exceptional concentration of religious heritage and the site's role in Christian history and Byzantine culture form the basis for its recognition as a monument of outstanding universal value.
