Located in western Turkey, this cultural site comprises the ancient city of Sardes and the monumental burial mounds of Bin Tepe scattered across the Lydian landscape. Sardes served as the capital of the Lydian Kingdom and later became an important center under Persian and Hellenistic rule, evidenced by its substantial architectural remains including temples, fortifications, and urban infrastructure. The site is characterized by the presence of numerous tumuli, or burial mounds, which represent the funerary practices of the Lydian elite and provide significant archaeological evidence of the region's ancient civilization. The monumental scale of these tombs and the quality of artifacts recovered from them demonstrate the wealth and cultural sophistication of Lydian society. The integration of urban remains with the burial landscape offers valuable insights into the organization and beliefs of this ancient Anatolian civilization. Together, these archaeological elements document an important phase of cultural development in the Eastern Mediterranean during the Iron Age and Classical periods.
