This cultural heritage site encompasses the historic centre of Córdoba, located in the Andalusia region of southern Spain. The site represents a significant example of medieval Islamic urban planning and architecture, developed during the period when Córdoba served as a major centre of the Umayyad Caliphate. The historic quarter is characterized by its narrow winding streets, whitewashed buildings, and traditional courtyards (patios) that reflect centuries of coexistence between Islamic, Christian, and Jewish communities. The most prominent architectural feature is the Great Mosque (Mezquita), renowned for its distinctive horseshoe arches and hypostyle hall, which was later transformed into a cathedral. The urban layout and built environment preserve evidence of the city's multicultural heritage, with remnants of the medieval Jewish quarter (Judería) and various religious and secular structures visible throughout the centre. The site constitutes a valuable testimony to the sophisticated urban culture and artistic achievements of medieval Al-Andalus.
