Located in Sichuan Province in southwestern China, this cultural site encompasses the panoramic landscape of Mount Emei and the adjacent Great Buddha of Leshan. The landscape is characterized by the dramatic topography of Mount Emei, a sacred Buddhist mountain rising sharply from the plains, combined with the monumental stone carving of the Great Buddha, which depicts a seated figure carved into a cliff face overlooking the confluence of three rivers. The site represents a significant example of the integration of natural landforms with monumental religious architecture within the Chinese landscape tradition. Mount Emei has served as an important pilgrimage destination and center of Buddhist practice for centuries, with numerous temples and monasteries positioned throughout the mountainous terrain. The Great Buddha of Leshan, constructed during the Tang Dynasty, demonstrates the technical achievement of large-scale rock carving and reflects the deep cultural connections between religious devotion and landscape aesthetics in Chinese civilization. Together, these elements form a landscape that documents both the spiritual significance and artistic capabilities of historical Chinese Buddhist culture.
