This cultural site comprises a series of distinctive landforms characterized by steep cliffs and dramatically colored rock formations found across multiple locations in China. The Danxia landscapes result from ancient geological processes involving the erosion of red sandstone and conglomerate deposits, creating striking vertical rock faces in shades of red, orange, and yellow. These formations hold significant scientific and aesthetic value, representing rare examples of this particular type of geomorphological feature on a global scale. The sites are distributed across several provinces in southern and central China, where they have long been appreciated in Chinese cultural and artistic traditions. The visual distinctiveness of the red rock formations, combined with their geological importance and cultural significance within Chinese heritage, establishes their importance as natural and cultural landmarks. These landscapes continue to attract scholarly attention for their contribution to understanding erosion processes and depositional geology in subtropical regions.
