Located in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile, this heritage site comprises two former saltpetre refineries that represent the industrial infrastructure of the nitrate boom that transformed the region during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Humberstone and Santa Laura facilities exemplify the technological and organizational systems developed for large-scale extraction and processing of natural nitrate deposits, which were essential for global fertilizer and explosives production. The site features well-preserved company towns with distinctive architecture, including workers' housing, administrative buildings, warehouses, and processing plants, reflecting the social structures and living conditions of the nitrate industry's workforce. The harsh desert landscape contrasts sharply with the substantial industrial complexes, demonstrating human adaptation to one of the world's most arid environments. These sites document an important chapter in industrial history and the socioeconomic development of the region, serving as tangible evidence of a pivotal but now-defunct extractive industry. The abandonment of the facilities has preserved their historical character, offering significant insights into early 20th-century industrial practices and worker communities.
