This primeval forest straddles the border between Belarus and Poland in Eastern Europe, representing one of the last remaining examples of the natural forest that once covered the European Plain. The site is characterized by its old-growth woodland ecosystem, featuring diverse tree species and complex forest structures that have developed with minimal human intervention over centuries. Białowieża is significant for its ecological value, preserving intact habitats that support numerous plant and animal species adapted to temperate forest conditions. The forest's designation reflects its importance as a natural laboratory for understanding European forest dynamics and biodiversity in a landscape that has been substantially modified elsewhere. The dense woodland landscape, with its mixture of deciduous and coniferous trees, presents a visually distinctive environment that contrasts sharply with the cultivated agricultural areas surrounding it. The site serves as a crucial refuge for species whose populations have declined across Europe due to habitat loss and forest management practices.
