Located in northeastern Brazil in the state of Maranhão, this national park encompasses an extensive area of coastal wetlands, lagoons, and sand dunes that form a distinctive natural landscape. The site is characterized by its remarkable hydrological system where freshwater lagoons are interspersed between white sand dunes, creating a unique ecological environment that varies seasonally with the region's rainfall patterns. The park supports diverse fauna and flora adapted to its particular conditions, including several species of migratory birds and fish found in its numerous interconnected lagoons. The visual distinction of the landscape, with its contrasting white sandy formations and blue-green water bodies, results from the interplay of marine and fluvial geomorphological processes. This natural environment represents an important ecosystem for biodiversity conservation and demonstrates significant geological and hydrological characteristics of the South American coastal zone. The area has been recognized for its ecological value and the preservation of its relatively undisturbed natural state.
