Located in the highlands of Bolivia near Lake Titicaca, this archaeological site represents the spiritual and political centre of the Tiwanaku culture, one of the most important pre-Columbian civilizations of South America. The site contains monumental stone structures, including pyramids, temples, and plazas, that demonstrate sophisticated architectural and engineering knowledge. The distinctive visual character of Tiwanaku is marked by precisely carved stone blocks and elaborately decorated gateways, particularly the Gate of the Sun, which features intricate symbolic iconography. The settlement flourished between approximately 500 and 900 CE and served as a major ceremonial and administrative hub for the broader Tiwanaku state. The site's cultural significance lies in its evidence of advanced urban planning, astronomical knowledge, and artistic achievement that influenced subsequent Andean civilizations. The remains provide crucial archaeological information about pre-Incan political organization and religious practices in the region.
