These medieval graveyards contain distinctive stone tombstones known as stećci, which were erected in Bosnia and Herzegovina from the 12th to 16th centuries. The stećci represent a unique form of monumental funerary art that flourished during the medieval period and are characterized by their varied shapes, from simple slabs to elaborate forms, often decorated with geometric patterns, relief sculptures, and inscriptions. The sites are scattered across the region and document the burial practices of the medieval population, reflecting the complex religious and cultural history of the Balkans during this period. These graveyards were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in recognition of their outstanding universal value as testimony to a distinctive local tradition and their artistic and historical significance. The decoration and typology of the stećci provide important information about medieval society, symbolism, and the evolution of artistic styles in the region. The graveyards collectively represent an important cultural heritage that illustrates the development of monumental stone carving in medieval southeastern Europe.
