This natural heritage site encompasses pristine beech forest ecosystems distributed across multiple European regions, with significant portions located in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The forests represent outstanding examples of old-growth beech woodlands that have developed under minimal human intervention, preserving ecological processes characteristic of European temperate forests. The site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List through successive phases beginning in 2007, with extensions in 2011 and 2017 to include additional forest areas across the continent. Located primarily in the Carpathian mountain range and extending to other European regions, these forests demonstrate the natural regeneration and evolution of beech-dominated ecosystems over centuries. The site's significance lies in its exceptional scientific value for understanding forest dynamics, biodiversity, and the adaptation of plant and animal species to temperate climate conditions. Visually, the forests are characterized by their dense canopy, complex vertical structure, and rich understory vegetation typical of undisturbed beech woodland ecosystems.
