Located in northwestern Argentina in the provinces of San Juan and La Rioja, these two adjoining natural parks preserve exceptional geological formations spanning approximately 65 million years of Earth's history. The sites are distinguished by their outstanding paleontological significance, containing rich fossil records that document the evolution of terrestrial vertebrates during the Mesozoic Era. The landscape is characterized by dramatic multicolored rock formations, deep canyons, and eroded badlands that reveal successive geological layers with remarkable clarity. Ischigualasto and Talampaya together form a comprehensive geological sequence that provides crucial evidence for understanding the transition between different prehistoric periods and the development of early dinosaur species. The stark, arid terrain with its distinctive red, yellow, and gray rock strata creates a visually striking environment that reflects the complex geological processes that shaped the region over millions of years.
