Located in the village of Marmagne in the Côte-d'Or department of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, this Cistercian monastery was founded in 1118 and represents a remarkable example of Burgundian Romanesque architecture. The abbey exemplifies the austere aesthetic principles of the Cistercian order, with its harmonious proportions, plain stone construction, and functional design devoid of decorative excess. The complex includes a church, cloisters, dormitories, refectory, and other monastic buildings arranged around courtyards, demonstrating the self-sufficient organization of medieval monastic life. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1981, the site was recognized for its architectural integrity and its significant influence on Cistercian design throughout medieval Europe. The abbey's well-preserved state and its coherent layout make it an important testimony to monastic communities and their material culture during the Middle Ages. Fontenay represents a significant achievement in medieval architecture and provides valuable insight into the spiritual and practical aspects of Cistercian monasticism.
