Located in southeastern Montenegro along the Adriatic coast, this site encompasses the natural and cultural-historical area surrounding the Bay of Kotor, a deeply indented coastal inlet surrounded by limestone mountains. The bay's distinctive geography creates a landscape where terrestrial and maritime environments interact, supporting diverse ecosystems and settlements shaped by centuries of human activity. The area contains medieval towns, fortifications, and architectural heritage reflecting successive periods of influence from Venetian, Austro-Hungarian, and local Montenegrin cultures. The natural setting includes steep karst topography, Mediterranean vegetation, and marine habitats that have influenced settlement patterns and economic activities throughout history. The site's inscription as a mixed heritage property recognizes both its ecological significance and the cumulative cultural achievements embedded within its urban and rural landscapes.
