Located in Ravno, Bosnia and Herzegovina, this cave system represents a significant example of karst landscape formation and subterranean geology in the Mediterranean region. Vjetrenica Cave was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2024 in recognition of its natural value and the geological processes that have shaped its development. The site is characterized by extensive passages, underground chambers, and distinctive speleological features formed through the dissolution of limestone over geological timescales. The cave's unique hydrological conditions and stable microclimate have created an environment of particular scientific interest for studying cave ecosystems and geological history. Its setting within the broader karst terrain of southern Bosnia and Herzegovina illustrates the complex relationship between water, rock, and landscape in this region. The site contributes to the understanding of natural heritage and geological diversity within the Mediterranean and Southeast European context.
