This serial property comprises seven archaeological sites located across northern Italy that document the settlement and cultural development of the Longobards during their rule from 568 to 774 A.D. The sites include fortified settlements, religious buildings, and administrative centers that represent the material culture and artistic achievements of this Germanic people during the early medieval period. Located primarily in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, with additional sites in Tuscany and Campania, the property demonstrates the geographic extent of Longobard influence in the Italian peninsula. The archaeological remains feature distinctive architectural elements, decorative arts, and burial practices that reflect the synthesis of Germanic and Mediterranean traditions. These places of power serve as significant testimony to the political, social, and religious structures of the Longobard kingdom, contributing substantially to the understanding of early medieval European history. The inscription recognizes the outstanding universal value of these sites in illustrating a crucial period of transition between the Classical and Medieval worlds.
