This natural site comprises a series of beech forest reserves located across the Carpathian Mountains and other regions of Europe, with component areas in Italy and several other countries. The forests represent outstanding examples of primeval and ancient beech ecosystems that have developed over millennia with minimal human intervention. These woodlands are characterized by their old-growth structure, featuring trees of various ages and sizes, complex forest composition, and natural regeneration cycles that reflect pre-industrial forest dynamics. The site was inscribed in recognition of its exceptional value for understanding temperate beech forest ecology and evolutionary processes, as well as its role in biodiversity conservation. The Italian component forms part of this transnational serial property that documents the natural distribution and development of European beech forests across different altitudes and climatic zones. The forests serve as living laboratories for scientific research on forest succession and the long-term ecological relationships that characterize undisturbed temperate woodland systems.
