Assour (Qal'at Cherqat)
Located in northern Iraq, this archaeological site preserves the remains of Assour, one of the oldest and most significant cities of ancient Mesopotamia. The site contains multiple layers of occupation spanning several millennia, documenting the development of urban civilization in the region. Its architectural and artefactual remains provide essential evidence for understanding the political, religious and cultural systems of successive Mesopotamian societies. The physical setting on a commanding position above the Tigris River reflects the strategic importance of the city throughout antiquity.
