Located in the Nord department of the Hauts-de-France region, this cultural heritage site encompasses the mining basin that shaped the industrial landscape of northern France for nearly three centuries. The area was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2012 in recognition of its outstanding testimony to coal mining operations and their profound impact on European industrial development. The site preserves remnants of the mining infrastructure including pit heads, workers' housing, and associated industrial facilities that document the technical and social history of coal extraction from the 18th century onwards. Its geographical setting reflects the geological conditions that made the region a major coal-producing area, with the landscape visibly marked by mining operations and their legacy. The heritage basin demonstrates the interconnection between industrial production, urban development, and the lives of mining communities. Today, the preserved structures and landscape features continue to illustrate the economic and cultural significance of mining in shaping the region's identity.
