Located in southeastern Albania near the border with North Macedonia, this mixed heritage site encompasses the natural and cultural properties of the Ohrid region. The area is centered on Lake Ohrid, one of Europe's oldest and deepest freshwater lakes, which supports exceptional biodiversity including numerous endemic species found nowhere else on Earth. The region's cultural significance derives from its historical importance as a major center of medieval Slavic civilization, evidenced by ancient churches, monasteries, and archaeological remains that reflect centuries of Christian Orthodox tradition.
