Ploubazlanec · Côtes-d'Armor · Bretagne

The Iceland and Newfoundland Memory Museum, managed by the association PLAERANEG GWECHALL, is an associative museum located in Ploubazlanec in Côtes-d'Armor. It documents the history of the great fishing expeditions to Newfoundland and Iceland, a major economic activity in the Paimpol region from the early 16th century until the 1930s. The museum brings together testimonies, logbooks, fishing objects and personal effects collected by descendants of "Icelanders" and enthusiasts, with the aim of preserving the memory of the extreme living conditions endured by these sailors. Created in 1993 by four pioneers and inaugurated in 1994, the museum moved in 2024 to the Saint-Denis hall to better welcome its visitors and present all of its collections. The association also pursues broader action for the preservation of Ploubazlanec's maritime, religious and cultural heritage.
