The Museum of Fine Arts in Lons-le-Saunier was founded in 1817 by the Jura Emulation Society. Located since 1857 in a wing of the town hall, it houses a collection of sculptures and paintings presented permanently on the ground floor and first floor. The sculptures include nineteenth-century works by artists such as Antoine Etex, François-Rupert Carabin and Jean-Joseph Perraud, a sculptor of Jura origin whose studio and personal collection enriched the museum's collections. The paintings section brings together works representative of Nordic, Italian and French schools from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries, including paintings by Pieter Brueghel the Younger, Pietro della Vecchia and Gustave Courbet. The museum regularly organizes temporary exhibitions devoted to its archaeological and natural history collections.
