The Cutlery Museum, a municipal establishment, is located in Thiers in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, a city historically recognized for its cutlery industry. The museum traces the social and economic history of Thiers cutlery-making, from its artisanal origins to the beginning of industrialization, highlighting the working conditions and diverse skills of cutlers. The seven hundred pieces on display bear witness to the evolution of the knife from the 16th century to the contemporary period, presenting productions from French and foreign cutlery centers, varied forms and noble materials such as mother-of-pearl, ivory and gold. The museum emphasizes the artisanal organization in "ranks," the guild and the quality of production that ensured the international reputation of Thiers cutlery-making. It also offers educational workshops for children to discover manufacturing and decoration techniques.
