The Allier River Navigation Museum Pierre-Mondanel, located in Pont-du-Château in Puy-de-Dôme, documents the river history of this commune. Named after the historian Pierre Mondanel, author of a reference work on navigation of the Allier and Dore rivers, the museum traces the importance of river transport from the 16th to 19th centuries, a period when Pont-du-Château constituted the main port of the Clermont region. The goods passing through its quays—wood, coal, wine, Volvic stone, and hemp—generally supplied Parisian markets. The collection was formed from donations of objects and documents gathered by Pierre Mondanel, later enriched by contributions from local residents. The museum welcomes visitors during the summer season and during Heritage Days, by appointment for the rest of the year.
