The Grand Trianon is a palace built in 1687 by Jules Hardouin-Mansart on the estate of Versailles, replacing the Porcelain Trianon constructed by Louis XIV in 1670. A building of refined architecture, characterized by its horizontal elevation on a single level and its distinctive material of pink marble and porphyry, it opens widely onto formal gardens adorned with flower beds. A royal residence frequented by Louis XIV, Marie Leszczynska and Napoleon, it underwent major restoration under General de Gaulle from 1963 onwards to accommodate guests of the Republic. The current furnishings, derived largely from the First Empire after the revolutionary dispersal of the original collections, furnish sovereign apartments, state rooms and reception spaces. A site museum integrated into the national estate of the Châteaux of Versailles and Trianon, it is labeled a Museum of France.
