The Écomusée of Marie-Galante occupies the site of Habitation Murat, a former sugar plantation dating from the early 19th century, established on the heights of Grand-Bourg. Founded in the mid-17th century and modernized from 1807 by Dominique Murat, this plantation became one of the most powerful in Guadeloupe before its decline following the abolition of slavery in 1848. The museum presents the popular arts and traditions of Marie-Galante, spanning three centuries of colonial sugar history. The site preserves notable architectural remains: the neoclassical Master's House, the ruins of the windmill and sugar works, as well as reconstructions of slave quarters. It also includes a medicinal garden inspired by local naturalistic knowledge, offering an approach to the island's agrarian and cultural heritage.
