Founded in 1911 by Marius and Ary Leblond with the support of poet Léon Dierx, the Léon Dierx Museum is a public institution located in Saint-Denis, Réunion, in a former bishop's palace. It is the island's first colonial museum and holds the label. The museum has progressively oriented itself toward fine arts and notably houses an exceptional modern art collection enriched in 1947 by the donation of 157 works from the Vollard collection, comprising artists such as Picasso, Gauguin, Renoir and Cézanne. Alongside this fund of Western art from the second half of the 19th century and the 1930s is a body of contemporary art assembled since the 1990s. The museum welcomes between 20,000 and 25,000 visitors annually and offers free visits, guided tours and educational programs.
