Saint-Pierre-la-Palud · Rhône · Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The Museum of Mining and Mineralogy of Saint-Pierre-la-Palud, located in the Rhône region, documents the history of local mining operations, particularly iron pyrite extraction from the 19th century until its closure. The guided tour leads visitors through galleries and mining sites reconstructed by former miners, where tools, equipment, and testimonies relating to underground work between the 1930s and the closure are presented. The museum also offers a self-guided tour dedicated to mineralogical and paleontological collections, including a collection of more than 2,790 samples distributed across 41 display cases, among which are specimens from around the world and remarkable local minerals such as azurites. The Puits Perret Trail provides free access to the mining site, offering the opportunity to discover the mining headframe, the surface buildings, and the engine room. The museum also hosts exhibitions of archives and mining equipment, including approximately 130 historical lamps from the 19th and 20th centuries.
