Montbard · Côte-d'Or · Bourgogne-Franche-Comté
The Buffon Museum and Park is a site museum located in Montbard, in Côte-d'Or, labeled "House of Illustrious Figures" and classified as a Historic Monument. It presents the history of science through the figures of Georges-Louis Leclerc, Count of Buffon (1707-1788) and Louis Jean-Marie Daubenton (1716-1800), both born in Montbard. The park, developed by Buffon in the 18th century, occupies the remains of the castle of the Dukes of Burgundy and notably preserves the naturalist's study, where the 36 volumes of Natural History were composed. The remarkable buildings on the site include the Tower of Aubespin, the highest terrace tower in Burgundy, as well as the Saint-Louis Tower and the ramparts of the former fortress. The park remains free and open to the public year-round, while the museum offers exhibitions and guided tours according to a seasonal schedule.
