The Iron Mask and Royal Fort Museum occupies the oldest part of the Royal Fort, a Vauban-style fortification built in the 17th century on the island of Sainte-Marguerite, in the Lérins Islands. The museum presents the former State prisons and in particular the cell of the Iron Mask, a mysterious prisoner incarcerated for eleven years in this fort between 1687 and 1698. The site also includes a Huguenot memorial dedicated to Protestant pastors imprisoned after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, as well as contemporary mural works by Jean Le Gac. The collections include underwater archaeological remains from Roman and Saracen wrecks, displayed in the accessible Roman cisterns and on the first floor, as well as fragments of Roman murals discovered during land excavations. A space dedicated to temporary exhibitions opens onto a terrace overlooking the Mediterranean.
