The Museum of Lace Manufactures of Retournac, in Haute-Loire, preserves an entire lace manufacturing workshop in its original building. Unique in France in the field of decorative arts, it houses an exceptional collection of more than 450,000 pieces covering the European history of lace from the 16th century to the present day. The permanent exhibition, organized in six sections spread over two levels, presents the history of lace, the daily life of 20th-century lace makers, the organization of the manufacture, the creative activities of designers, mechanical textile machines, and the productions of Haute-Loire from the late 19th to the mid-20th century. Demonstrations, introductory workshops, and temporary exhibitions regularly complement the visit. It remains an essential hub among European textile museums.
