The Museum of the History of Medicine is located on the second floor of the Paris Cité University headquarters, in a room built in 1905, at the heart of the former Faculty of Medicine. Inaugurated in the mid-1950s, it only opened its doors to the general public in 1994, after having been reserved for teachers and students. Its collections, among the oldest in Europe, were assembled from the 18th century by dean Lafaye and enriched with instruments and documentary collections covering the history of surgical art until the end of the 19th century. The museum notably preserves instruments that belonged to the care of Louis XIV, as well as kits of physicians and surgeons, and instruments of physiology. The museum offers free-access visits from Monday to Saturday, on a fee basis.
