The Museum of Corsican Archaeology, located in Sartène in South Corsica, presents archaeological collections characteristic of the island from the earliest settlements, nearly 10,000 years ago, until the end of the Genoese period in the 15th century. The most important collections concern prehistory, the Bronze Age and the Iron Age, with weapons, ceramics, tools and ornaments. The museum houses a remarkable collection of menhir-statues, a major testament to Mediterranean megalithism. The Roman period, notably underwater archaeology, and the Middle Ages are also represented by significant pieces revealing the commercial exchange dynamics and conflicts of the region. Located at the top of the old town in a contemporary building adjacent to the former prison, the museum also offers a panorama of the Gulf of Valinco. It regularly receives material from excavations conducted on the island and constitutes an essential complement to Corsican megalithic sites.
