An archaeological site museum established on the territory of the former Roman city of Cemenelum, the Museum of Archaeology of Nice Cimiez presents the remains of this ancient city, capital of the Alpes Maritimae province. Its collections, made up of objects discovered during excavations from 1950 to 1969, cover the Metal Ages, Antiquity and the early Middle Ages and illustrate the daily life, social organization and spirituality of ancient populations. The site preserves three complete thermal complexes, an amphitheater, dwellings, shops and the remains of a paleochristian complex comprising a church and a baptistry. The collections also include objects from shipwrecks, Greek, Etruscan and Italic ceramics from private collections bequeathed to the city, as well as a deposit of the Campana collection. Inaugurated in 1989, the museum succeeded the first site museum created in 1960 and constitutes an archaeological testimony to the Roman presence in the Nice region.
